BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Lancers Find Almont Title Not a Schurr Thing

The Bell Gardens Lancers used solid defense and balanced scoring to defeat Schurr, 65-47, and earn a share of the Almont League title Friday at Bell Gardens.

Bell Gardens limited Schurr to only five points in the fourth quarter, while opening up an 18-point lead on a layup by guard Pete Loza.

Simon Garcia led Bell Gardens with 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals and forward Eddie Santana chipped in 14 points. Guard Kats Miyagi scored 17 points for Schurr.

Records: Bell Gardens 17-7; Schurr 15-6

FRIDAY

Notre Dame 77, Loyola 68--Despite Toby Bailey’s 17 points and Bobby Thomason’s 16, Loyola lost its final Mission League game to host Notre Dame.

The Cubs trailed throughout the game, but cut the Knights’ lead to six points on Ryan Callahan’s three-point shot with 23 seconds left to play.

Records: Loyola 18-6; Notre Dame 20-6.

Washington 68, Carson 47--Dayron Harris had 17 points and 11 rebounds as Washington completed the last of a five-game road trip with a Southern Pacific Conference victory.

Craige Slaughter, who has been bothered by an ankle injury, scored 15 points in the first half, including four three-point shots.

In Wednesday’s game, Washington beat Gardena, 64-51.

Records: Washington 18-3, Carson 13-10.

Venice 83, Los Angeles 81 (2 OT)--Rasheed Hazzard led all scorers with 24 points as Venice won a double overtime Coastal Conference game.

Trailing 81-76 late in the second overtime, Hazzard made consecutive layups and the ensuing free throws after being fouled each time. Larry Atkins scored 20 for the Gondoliers, including a three-point basket as time expired in regulation.

Brandon Thomas had 17 points for Los Angeles.

Records: Venice 11-6, Los Angeles 9-12

Manual Arts 66, Palisades 61--Darwin Carter’s steal and layup with 1:22 to go gave Manual Arts a 62-61 lead and Andrew Dawson’s four free throws sealed the Coastal Conference victory.

Carter led Manual Arts with 17 and Dawson added 15 points and nine assists.

Records: Palisades 12-6; Manual Arts 16-6.

South Gate 65, Locke 63--Al Rangel hit a driving layup with nine seconds left to lead the Rams in a Southeastern Conference at Locke.

Locke’s Akili Roberson missed a desperation three-point shot as time expired.

Demetrius Nettles scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Saints from a 12-point deficit to tie the score, 61-61, with 1:50 left.

Each team traded baskets until Rangel, who had 14 points, made the winning shot.

Eric Wright led South Gate with 17 points and Miguel Villegas added 16.

In Wednesday’s game, South Gate beat Huntington Park, 91-58.

Records: South Gate 20-3; Locke 20-9.

Roosevelt 63, Jefferson 62--Trailing 62-58 with 18 seconds to play, guard Miguel Moran’s three-pointer and Gera Arrangure’s basket off a missed free throw gave Roosevelt a 63-62 upset in a Southeastern Conference game.

Jefferson led 47-42 early in the fourth quarter, but Roosevelt went on a 12-3 run that put them ahead 54-50, with 3:39 to play.

Jefferson’s Anthony Martin scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, including two three-point shots. as Jefferson regained the lead with a 12-4 scoring spree.

Martin, a 5-10 guard, attempted a last second three-point shot that fell short.

Records: Jefferson 10-10; Roosevelt 4-15.

Bell 74, Jordan 67--Mario Ceja scored 20 points and Jerry Espinoza added 14 as Bell won an Eastern League game at Jordan. Carlos Cabada had 20 points and Clem Breedlove scored 15 to lead Jordan.

Record: Jordan 1-17.

Belmont 71, Marshall 68 (OT)--Jose Calderon made a three-point shot with three seconds left in overtime as Belmont upset Marshall and kept its playoff hopes alive in a Northern Conference game.

Soon Hong, a 5-5 point guard, led Belmont with 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.

Belmont must beat Lincoln Wednesday and Wilson Friday to have a shot at a wild-card spot in the 3-A Division playoffs.

Record: Belmont 9-10.

Lincoln 70, Hollywood 55--Keith Whitner scored 23 points, including 17 in the second half, and Ruben Castellanos added 16 as Lincoln won a Northern Conference game at Hollywood.

Record: Lincoln 17-4; Hollywood 0-12.

WEDNESDAY

Loyola 89, Chaminade 60--Edwin Canady had 13 points as five Cubs scored in double-figures in a Mission League win.

Records: Loyola 19-5; Chaminade 6-16.

Garfield 104, Jordan 73--Alex Gomez scored a game-high 44 points as Garfield ran away with an Eastern League victory. Clem Breedlove led Jordan with 29 points.

Records: Garfield 14-9; Jordan 1-16

Lincoln 86, Marshall 63--Ruben Castellano scored 25 and Marcelo Ortega added 19 to lead Lincoln to a Northern Conference win. Brian Goldberg scored 25 points for Marshall.

Belmont 80, Hollywood 50--Belmont’s Oliver Collado scored a game-high 31 points in a Northeast League win. Ryan Gardner led Hollywood with 27 points.

Fairfax 76, Los Angeles 63--Terrel Woolery scored 17 points and Latrell McFrazier chipped in 16, but it was not enough as Los Angeles fell in a Coastal Conference game.

Going into the fourth quarter, Los Angeles trailed 48-47, but the Lions went on a 28-16 run to finish the game. Carlton Codd scored 12 points and Kenny Lightfoot added 11 for the Romans. Loris Gardiner led the Lions with 17 points.

Record: Los Angeles 9-11

Crenshaw 122, San Pedro 58--The victories keep coming for Crenshaw, which improved to 7-0 in the Southern Pacific League with a crushing win over San Pedro.

Kristaan Johnson scored 30 and grabbed 10 rebounds for Crenshaw. Tremaine Fowlkes added 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Cougars controlled the game from the start.

Raymond Tuft was impressive in defeat, scoring a game-high 43 points for San Pedro.

Records: Crenshaw 18-2

Wilson 75, Verdugo Hills 44--Paul Hunt and Octavio Brito scored 27 points each in a Northern Conference win that may have earned Wilson a berth in the City 3-A playoffs.

Wilson led 26-22 when Hunt and Brito combined for 18 of 22 consecutive points over a six-minute span in the second and third periods, breaking the game open, 48-22.

Records: Wilson 10-11; Verdugo Hills 9-12.

Fremont 86, Sherman Oaks CES 19--Fremont, the 1992 City 3-A champion, proved to be more than a match for visiting Sherman Oaks CES in a non-league contest.

Calvin Patterson led the Pathfinders with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Fremont surrendered only one point in the first quarter and eight in the half.

John Cannon was the only Sherman Oaks player to reach double figures, with 11 points.

Record: Fremont 16-5

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Cal State San Bernardino 87, Cal State Los Angeles 68--The Coyotes put the game out of reach with a 13-4 spurt that gave them a 77-62 lead with about three minutes left in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Cal State Los Angeles Thursday night.

Lorenzo Ball had 17 points and Tony McGee, Aaron Latimore and Marcus Williams scored 14 each for the Golden Eagles, who lost their fourth game in a row.
