COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Women End Skid With 62-53 Win Over CSLA

Cal State Northridge’s women’s basketball team ended nearly two months of futility Tuesday by beating Cal State Los Angeles, 62-53, in front of 112 fans at Matador Gymnasium. The victory marked the end of a 13-game losing streak that dated to Dec. 29.

CSUN was led by Mary Jane Espino (17 points, six steals) and Haily Griffith (14 points, 10 rebounds).

BASEBALL

Moorpark 4, Bakersfield 3--Jason Cash’s timely single and Josh Zamarripa’s five-hit pitching allowed the Raiders to win their Western State Conference opener and improve to 4-4.

Ventura 11, Oxnard 6--Freshman left-hander Tighe Curran allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, helping Ventura (3-2) overcome Oxnard (4-4) in a Western State Conference opener.

Oxnard led, 6-4, in the third when Curran came on in relief of starter Jason Isaacs.

Ventura reclaimed the lead for good with two runs in the fifth that made the score 7-6.

Canyons 7, Cuesta 6--Bolstered by a two-run home run by John Davis and a run-scoring double by Keith Halcovich, the Cougars (4-2, 1-0) scored five runs in the fifth to overcome a 4-1 deficit in a Western State Conference game.

Valley 5, Santa Monica 2--David Stevenson, a former Times All-Valley player at Chatsworth High, had two hits, including a solo homer in the first inning, and Willie Rivera (1-1) struck out seven in seven innings to lead the Monarchs (2-5, 1-0) to a Western State Conference victory.

The Master’s 5, Cal Baptist 2--Bart Jennings (1-0) allowed six hits and two runs over seven innings to lead the Mustangs (6-1, 3-0) to an NAIA District 3 victory against Cal Baptist (1-6, 0-1).
