Mater Dei demonstrated precisely why it is seeded No. 1 in the Division I-A playoffs Friday night as it defeated Ontario, 100-28, in a first-round game at the Bren Center.

The Monarchs (27-1) seized control of the game at the outset, building a 17-2 lead in the first quarter. After Coach Gary McKnight pulled his starters midway through the fourth quarter, the reserves closed out the game with a 13-3 run. Josh Porter hit a 25-footer at the buzzer as Mater Dei reached the century mark for the third time this season.

“They were intense tonight, really focused,” said McKnight. “We had a week layoff so we were well-rested and had fresh legs.”
