COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Men, Women 2nd in Swimming Meet

Cal State Northridge men’s and women’s swimming teams placed second in the Pacific Collegiate Conference Championships at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach Saturday. The Matador men (638 points) finished behind UC Davis (817) in a six-team field. The women (640) trailed Air Force (687) in an eight-team draw.

CSUN coaches said it was the best performances they could have hoped for. The men outscored Northern Arizona (which finished third) by 69 points on the third and final day to finish second. The men were led by Mike Prahm, who won the 100-yard freestyle event and was part of the 400 freestyle relay team of Mike Cann, Steve Liljeberg, Eric Matheson and Prahm--which posted a conference-record time of 3:04.07.

Matador Heather Ballard was named swimmer of the meet after she won each of the seven events she entered over the three days and set conference records in all four of her individual events. On Saturday, Ballard, a freshman from Birmingham High, set a new mark (16:38.76) in the 1,640-yard freestyle and anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay with Nicole Hudson, Denise Lamoureaux and Jill Ogden.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge d. University of Pacific, 15-0, 16-14, 15-10--Coley Kyman and Axel Hager each finished with 16 kills and seven digs as the Matadors completed their Northern California trip with a convincing Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win at Pacific.

Sixth-ranked Northridge (10-3, 5-2), coming off a victory over No. 2 Stanford on Friday, has won three consecutive matches after a loss to UCLA. Against Pacific (1-6, 1-6), Northridge recorded a .396 hitting percentage and held Pacific to a .209 percentage.

“They came out very focused,” Northridge Coach John Price said of the first-game shutout. “We just needed to execute, and we did.”

Northridge setter Matt Unger joined Kyman and Hager with seven digs and Ken Lynch, returning from a back injury, had 13 kills. Craig Hewitt contributed with eight kills and five block assists. Pacific received 18 kills from Jeff Hall and 17 from Darren Lance.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 84, West Los Angeles 73--Rasaan Hall had 25 points and Jason Joynes added 18 for host Canyons in a Western State Conference South Division game. Carlos Flowers (12 points) and Cedric Jones (10 assists) also contributed for Canyons (18-14, 6-4 in division), which finds out Monday who it will play in Saturday’s first round of the state regional playoffs.

Reese Stovall had a game-high 34 points for West Los Angeles (3-7 in division).

Oxnard 85, Santa Barbara 75--Desmond Granger scored 14 points to lead Santa Barbara to a Western State Conference North Division victory. Lance Fay led Oxnard (16-14, 2-6) with 18 points.

The Master’s 85, Christian Heritage 70--Rogerio Soares hit six of nine shots from the field and scored 17 points to lead the host Mustangs (17-9, 11-2) to an NAIA District 3 victory. Christian Heritage (1-24) shot 38% from the field.

Antelope Valley 108, San Bernardino Valley 88--Danny Prince scored 21 points and dished out 11 assists, and guard Brian Willcox added 13 points and 12 assists as Antelope Valley (23-8, 12-4) routed visiting San Bernardino Valley (18-11, 13-3) in a Foothill Conference game.

John Puckett added 19 points and seven rebounds, and Jason Grimes had 15 points with six rebounds for the Marauders, who built a 49-31 halftime advantage.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 77, Glendale 38--Nicole Baynes (12 points), Julie Nelson (10 points, seven rebounds) and Rosa Mendez (10 points) scored in double figures, and nine other Valley players scored as the host Monarchs won their 15th consecutive game and completed Western State Conference South Division play with an 8-0 record. Valley (29-4, 15-1) will find out today which team it will play at home in Wednesday’s opening round of the state regional playoffs.

Canyons 83, Pierce 52--Kate Stoll scored 20 points and Simone Souza added 16 points on eight-for-nine shooting as the host Cougars (12-19, 6-10) concluded the Western State Conference season with a South Division win.

Ventura 96, Moorpark 66--The Pirates, who have 18 victories in a row, won a WSC game without leading scorer Cori Herman, who was suspended because of her part in an altercation in Wednesday’s game against Oxnard.
