San Bernardino Drops El Modena

Senior guard Marcus Stocklin scored a game-high 27 points to lead San Bernardino to a 61-53 victory over El Modena in a Division II-A second-round playoff game Tuesday night.

Stocklin scored 14 of the Cardinals’ 16 points in the third quarter to put his team up, 43-38. Stocklin made seven of 11 shots from the field and made 13 of 15 free throws.

El Modena (15-10), which won the Century League title, committed 21 turnovers that led to 16 points for San Bernardino. Aaron Aguilera led the Vanguards with 15 points and 12 rebounds. He was five of 11 from the field and five of eight from the free-throw line.

San Bernardino jumped to a six-point lead in the first quarter as El Modena committed 10 turnovers. The Cardinals also led by six points at halftime. El Modena closed the gap to four, 51-47, with 2 minutes 45 seconds left in the game. But the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run keyed by a Stocklin layup and four free throws to go up, 59-47, with 1:40 left.

Vanguard freshman Brad Williams scored 13 points on six-of-seven shooting from the field. He also added six rebounds.

The Vanguards made 20 of 49 shots from the field and 10 of 19 free throws.

Ryan Williams added 11 points for San Bernardino (20-6), which will face Lakewood Artesia, a 72-45 winner over North Torrance, in Friday’s quarterfinals.
