Dick Hill, the winningest high school football coach in Orange County history, is interviewing today for the vacant Brethren Christian coaching position.

Hill, 64, is among several candidates for the position that was vacated when Mike Roark resigned this month.

Hill said he also applied for coaching positions at Ocean View and Buena Park, which recently hired former La Habra Coach Bob Rau.

Hill, 196-87-3 as a head coach, was fired in 1992 after eight seasons at Santa Ana High because he retired as a teacher at the end of the school year. The school required a full-time teacher to coach football.

“Brethren is the ideal job for me,” Hill said. “They stand for the things I stand for. The idea of a Christian school is appealing at this time.

“Society has a real need, and that’s why I don’t want to retire. I think I have something to offer kids, and I want to continue that through coaching football.”

He set the county record for victories in 1991, surpassing the mark of 191 set by Loara’s Herb Hill.

After leaving Santa Ana, Dick Hill spent last season as an assistant coach to Tom Meiss at Foothill.

“I never planned to leave coaching,” Dick Hill said. “I was a little late (looking for head coaching jobs) last year, so I worked with Tom. It was a great experience.”

Brethren Athletic Director Robin Davis said other applicants include Ken Sharrar, a Brethren teacher and an assistant football coach at San Clemente High, and Bruce Eien, Brethren’s offensive coordinator the last three years.

Davis said he anticipates selecting Roark’s replacement as early as March 15.

“I’m very pleased with the quality of coaches who have shown interest in the position,” Davis said.
