Key returners: Ryan Aday, Sr.; Bill Casas, Sr., moves from No. 3 singles to No. 1 singles; Josh Fair, So.; Brian Gruner, Sr., moves from No. 1 doubles to No. 2 singles; Jason Pascua, Sr., a two-year letterman in tennis and wrestling, will play No. 1 doubles.

Key newcomers: Khaled Husseini, Sr., is a foreign exhange from Jordan, where he is among the top six junior players; Christian Fernandez, So., up from junior varsity, has lost 40 pounds since last season.

Outlook: Smith and his team are hoping they can break through and finally win a league title after 23 years. “We’ve been to the quarterfinals and the semifinals of the section, but we’ve never won league,” Smith said. “It’s kind of crusade. No matter how good we were, there was always somebody better in our league. They want to be the first ever.” Smith said his strength is in numbers. “I don’t have a weak kid,” he said. “There are no throw-away points for us.
