PREP PREVIEW / BOYS TRACK : TEAMS TO WATCH : KATELLA
Coach: Mike Cochrane (15th year).
1992: Empire League runner-up. Third at State Division II cross-country championships.
Key returners: Brian Carlson, Sr., Keith Carraby, Sr., Doug Lilly, Sr., Michael Love, Sr.
Key newcomers: Mike Moreno, Jr., Delfino Resendiz, Jr.
Outlook: The Knights’ section championship cross-country team forms the backbone of the track team. Add Carlson, one of the state’s top high jumpers, and Lilly, a top hurdler, and it’s easy to see why Katella has a noteworthy team. Love and Carlson figure to challenge for State meet berths. Love was the county’s fastest 1,600-meter runner last season with a best of 4:14.72. He and Moreno were the top runners on the cross-country team, with Resendiz only a few seconds back. Love, who also ran 9:29.4 for 3,200 last season, qualified for the Kinney cross-country championships, finishing 26th. Carlson, the younger brother of 1990 State champion and county record-holder Kevin Carlson, cleared 6-8 last season and was the Empire League champion.
