Boys’ Soccer Final Has Frontier Feel

Calabasas and Santa Paula highs will stage a Frontier League reunion for the Southern Section Division V boys’ soccer championship at Gahr High today at 4 p.m.
Calabasas (16-4-2) swept the Cardinals (16-8-2) in two league matches this season to finish second behind Moorpark, which was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Santa Paula finished third. In 1988, Calabasas and Santa Paula met in the Division 1-A final with Santa Paula winning, 1-0.
“We know Calabasas quite well,” Santa Paula Coach Joe Magdaleno said. “But I don’t think that (Calabasas) will go in overconfident. That would be a disaster.”
Striker Joseph Jauregui, midfielders Albert Martinez and Adan Almaraz and sweeper Gil Martinez lead the Cardinals. Memo Alvarado will play goalkeeper, replacing Robert Rodriguez, who suffered a fractured jaw in a 2-1 semifinal win over Cabrillo on Tuesday.
Calabasas will rely on strikers Steve Thomas and Shayne Ferber, midfielders Brett Haessig and Adam Cooper, and defenders Jeff Toms and Daron Cooper. Goalie Josh Hahn has eight shutouts.
