OUTLOOK

A lot of questions surround the Sailors, who are coming off back-to-back fifth-place finishes. Some returnees combined with younger players should make every game a fun ride for Bates. “With the older kids’ experience and the young kids’ enthusiasm, we should be very competitive,” Bates said. Pitching seems to be their strength. Anderson has a strong arm, when healthy. However, he had arm problems last season. Buist finished fast and Eadie and Stelle should be improved. The pitching will have to be good because the Sailors are going to struggle for runs. In fact, in anticipation of that, Bates had new fences installed. “We put it way back,” he said. “I think the left field line is 380 feet. You have to tailor the field to suit your team.” Anderson, Ketcham and Parker will need to be consistent with runners in scoring position. Urbina should be the best of the newcomers. He will take on the responsibility of being the leadoff batter. The Sailors will start as many as five sophomores.
