OUTLOOK

Drake expects much of the Diablos’ success to center on Carr and Fielding. “We have two guys who are in the top three or four at their positions,” Drake said. Carr, a standout basketball and football player who holds school records with six home runs in a season and nine in a career, is the team’s leader. “He’s got good instincts,” Drake said. “He’s a good-sized kid who’s spent some time in the weight room. He’s got great hand-eye coordination, and he’s quick on his feet.” Fielding might be the fastest player in the county this season. He recently ran in the Sunkist Invitational track and field meet and plans to run the sprints and relays for the track team when he can fit it into his busy schedule. “He can really fly,” Drake said. He’s only 175 pounds, but he bench-presses 300 pounds. He’s a strong, hard-nosed kid.” So where does this leave Mission Viejo in the league race? “Obviously, Capo and Mater Dei should be good,” Drake said. “And we split with Capo over the summer. I hope we fit in well. We have a young, talented team. I think we’re going to be fairly decent.” Playing many league teams, the Diablos went 14-6 in the summer.
