El Toro Road Closed to Look for Suspect

Police closed El Toro Road for more than an hour Saturday night as they conducted an intensive search for the person who may have fired or thrown a projectile at an unoccupied police car, shattering a side-door window.

No one was hurt in the incident, which happened about 11:45 p.m., said Sgt. Robert Rahauser. Police were unable to locate a suspect or a weapon despite searching on foot, in cars and with helicopters.

The incident occurred at El Toro Road and Club Laguna Drive, where an officer was directing traffic because of an unrelated collision several blocks away on El Toro at Laguna Canyon Road.

While the Laguna Beach officer was guiding traffic, he saw and heard the window on the passenger side of his cruiser shatter, Rahauser said.

El Toro Road was subsequently closed while police, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies and two helicopter units combed the area. Police are investigating it as an “intentional act of vandalism.” Police said they do not know what shattered the window.
