NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Azusa Pacific Men Earn Trip to NAIA Tourney

The Azusa Pacific University men’s basketball team opened play Wednesday in the 32-team National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics championship tournament at Kansas City, Mo.

Azusa Pacific (30-3), making only its second appearance in the tournament, opened against the University of Minnesota-Morris (20-9). The winner was scheduled to play either Findlay (Ohio) or Belmont (Tenn.) today.

Azusa Pacific advanced to the tournament by winning the District 3 championship game against Westmont, 79-58, on Saturday. The victory helped the Cougars establish a school record for victories in a season.

Bob Terry of Azusa Pacific was named District 3 player of the year after averaging 15.9 points and 5.7 rebounds. Scott Day, who averaged 14.5 points, and Earic Peters, who averaged 14.2 points and 5.8 rebounds, were selected first-team All-District 3.

The La Verne University men’s basketball team finished its season last weekend with an 87-84 loss to Augustana College in the NCAA Division II playoffs at Platteville, Wis.

Matt Hatten scored 23 points and Joe Gonzalez added 18 for the Leopards, who finished 20-8.

The Cal State Los Angeles women’s track team finished third last weekend at the NCAA Division II indoor championships at Vermillion, S.D.

Cal State L.A. scored 28 points to finish behind Abilene Christian (57.5) and Norfolk State (33). Thirty women’s team competed in the event.

Marsha Guialdo of Cal State L.A. won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.76 seconds. She also finished second in the 400 in 55.41.

Janet Hill of Cal State L.A. won the shotput with a meet-record mark of 52 feet 6 1/2.

The Cal State L.A. men’s team finished ninth among 29 teams. Dale Johnson was the Golden Eagles’ highest finisher, placing third in the triple jump with a mark of 49-4 1/2.

The Los Altos High girls’ soccer team was among San Gabriel Valley-area high school teams that recently won Southern Section championships.

The Conquerors, coached by Dave Shirley, defeated Norco, 3-0, for the Division III title. It was Los Altos’ 18th shutout and third in the playoffs.

Faith Desatoff, a freshman, scored 32 goals for Los Altos (23-2-1).

Sixteen boys and 16 girls from San Gabriel Valley high schools have been selected to participate in the West San Gabriel Valley all-star basketball games for seniors March 27 at La Canada High.

The girls’ game begins at 6 p.m.; the boys’ game starts at 8.

The boys’ East team includes Ryan Becker of San Marino, Matt Campbell and Jeff Provenzano of Arcadia, Gariand Djemet of Southwestern Academy, Jamil Matthews of Marshall Fundamental, Matt McDevitt of South Pasadena, Justin Rawcliffe of Monrovia, Tony Shen of Temple City, Phil Su of San Gabriel, Otto Suarez of LaSalle and Treyvone Towns and Tyrone Williams of Pasadena. David Phuong of South Pasadena is an alternate.

Erik Heger of Pasadena Poly and Kacie Motley and Michael O’Quinn of Muir will play for the West team, which includes players from the Glendale-La Canada area.

The girls’ East team includes Kym Aoki of South Pasadena, Marianne Chandler of Arcadia, Lisl Cochrane-Bond and Barbara Thomas of Pasadena Poly, Mamawi Duffy and Carla Smith of Pasadena, Andrea Macciola of Maranatha, Krista Poehler of Westridge, Pat Sencion of San Gabriel, Danyelle Smith and Shaleen Williams of Monrovia, and Taya Woods of Blair. Chrys Hodges of Blair is an alternate.

Tamara Maldanado of Alhambra and Patrice McDuel and Cheralyn McGarity will play for the West team.

The Pride of the Foothills Spring Run, featuring a 5-K, 10-K, half-marathon and 2-K Fun Run/Walk will take place March 27 in Glendora.

The event includes $1,600 in prize money and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in nine age groups.

Athletes from more than 80 high schools are expected to participate in the 51st annual Pasadena Games track and field meet March 27 at Occidental College in Eagle Rock.

A golf tournament sponsored by the El Monte/South El Monte Chamber of Commerce will be played April 23 at San Dimas Canyon Golf Club.

The event will use a best ball format and also includes a dinner and awards presentation. The cost is $75.

A pro-am celebrity tennis and golf tournament that will benefit shelters for battered women and children will be played April 30 and May 1 at La Verne Country Club.

Tournament proceeds will aid the WINGS shelters in eastern Los Angeles County and San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 or older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division, and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also will include race-walking and tennis for disabled athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.
