Andy Shaw did not play baseball last year because of reconstructive knee surgery but it doesn’t appear as if the time away has done him any harm.

Shaw proved sharp Thursday, hitting three home runs to lead College of the Canyons past visiting Santa Monica, 12-2, in a Western State Conference baseball game.

Shaw, a freshman from Montclair Prep, transferred to Canyons (14-3, 11-1 in WSC play) after redshirting at Cal State Fullerton last season. He had seven runs batted in Thursday, blasting his conference-leading fifth, sixth and seventh homers over the right-field fence.

He had a three-run homer in the first and two-run shots in the second and sixth innings.

Chad Miyata hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, his second homer of the season, and Ted Kiester was three for three to give pitcher R.J. Simone (4-0) ample offensive support.

Only four of Santa Barbara’s runs were earned. Poor baserunning also hurt Ventura, which had four runners thrown out trying to take an extra base.

Ventura tied the score, 10-10, in the seventh, but Joe Eskenazi drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth. Eskenazi leads the conference in RBIs with 16.

Ron Tegland, who doubled and tripled, went four for five with three RBIs for Ventura. Mike Muncy and Chris Mace each added three hits.

The Master’s 9, Cal Baptist 2--Dan O’Sullivan hit three home runs and drove in five runs for the Mustangs (15-7, 5-2) in a NAIA District 3 victory at Cal Baptist.
