LA VERNE : Pizza Shop Owner Seized in Chamber of Commerce Fire

Share

The owner of a pizza restaurant was arrested on suspicion of arson after someone started a fire at the office of the La Verne Chamber of Commerce on Sunday night, causing $40,000 in damage.

La Verne police said someone broke a window at the office, poured in flammable liquid--perhaps gasoline--and ignited it. A neighbor saw a man run to a car and pointed him out to Officer Ed Careaga, who was getting off work at the nearby police station.

Lt. Jim Strona said Careaga followed the car, saw the driver throw a bag out the window and caught up with him as he pulled into his driveway in Pomona. Careaga arrested the driver, Roberto Cattani, at gunpoint. Strona said police recovered the bag and found three plastic bottles filled with a flammable liquid.
