SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Kenny Warren scored 24 points as top-ranked Cal State Bakersfield defeated No. 12 North Carolina Central, 86-80, in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals Thursday.
The Roadrunners--the only undefeated team in college basketball--extended their winning streak to 31 games. Their last loss was to Virginia Union, 69-66, in the semifinals of the 1992 Division II tournament.
North Carolina Central (26-3), which upset Virginia Union in the regionals, kept the game tight. No more than four points separated the teams until the last 4:40.
Then Warren hit a three-pointer, fed Reggie Phillips with an alley-oop pass and hit another three-pointer to give the Roadrunners a 77-72 edge and control of the game with 2:14 to play.
Roheen Oats and Tyrone Davis had 14 points each for Bakersfield.
In the semifinals tonight, the Roadrunners will play Wayne State (22-9), a 78-76 winner over Philadelphia Textile.
