ROUNDUP : O’Sullivan Ties School Record With 11th Homer in Master’s Win

Junior Dan O’Sullivan hit his 11th home run of the season to tie a school record and lead The Master’s to a 6-4 NAIA District 3 victory over Cal Baptist on Thursday at Newhall.

O’Sullivan’s two-run shot in the first inning tied the single-season record set last season by Andy Martin, now in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization.

Jeff Tomlinson added a three-run home run in the first inning for the Mustangs (18-12, 7-3 in league).

In other college baseball games:

Canyons 9, Ventura 8--Reliever Keith Halcovich (2-0) struck out Ventura’s Rob Fournier with runners at first and third to end the Western State Conference game at Valencia.

Canyons (19-4, 16-2) scored twice in the eighth to take a 9-7 lead before Halcovich, who entered in the eighth, yielded a run in the ninth.

John Aguilar had a three-run triple for Canyons. Fournier was two for four with two runs batted in for Ventura (9-13, 7-11).

Chris Pfatenhauer of Canyons was two for four, and teammate Chad Miyata was two for three.

Pierce 8, Cuesta 2--Herman Merchan’s two-run single with two out in the top of the sixth put Pierce ahead for good in a WSC game.

Josh Smaler had four hits for Pierce, while Merchan and Justin Wildhorn each had three.

Danny Rodriguez (4-1) went the distance.

Mission 10, Compton 3--Robert Garcia had a two-run double and Richard Avalos doubled home another run during a six-run seventh inning for the Free Spirit (18-7, 9-2) in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Compton.

Garcia was had three hits and four RBIs.

Glendale 13, Santa Barbara 4--Jose Robles hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to lead the host Vaqueros (13-11, 9-9) to a Western State Conference victory.

Robles, who has three home runs this season, was two for five with six RBIs in the game. Micky Moreno was two for three with two RBIs.

Freshman John Nall (5-3) earned the victory for Glendale.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Chatsworth 6, Cleveland 4--Ray Daryabigi singled home his twin brother Rodney with the game-winning run in the sixth inning of the Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

With the score tied, 3-3, Mike Amado of Chatsworth led off the sixth inning with a single. One out later, Rodney Daryabigi reached based on an error to put runners on first and second. Lou Enriquez singled home Amado as Daryabigi took third. Ray Daryabigi followed with his single, and after Mark Lopez was intentionally walked to load the bases, Brian LaCour hit a sacrifice fly to score Enriquez.

LaCour and Amado (two runs, two stolen bases) had two hits each for Chatsworth (9-2, 6-0).

Fillmore 7, Carpinteria 3--Louie Garza pitched a complete game, striking out 12 and walking none, and was three for three to lead the Flashes (6-2, 2-1) to a Tri-Valley League victory at Fillmore.

Catcher Isaac Jimenez had three RBIs on a bases-loaded double for Fillmore.

Verdugo Hills 4, Belmont 2--Senior first baseman Ron Battaglia was three for three, including a double, leading the Dons (4-6, 3-3) to a Northern Conference victory.

Matt Fitzgerald pitched a complete game, striking out three, for Verdugo Hills.

Grant 6, Canoga Park 3--The Lancers used four walks, a hit batter, error and Aaron Amitin’s two-run single to score six runs in the sixth inning in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Grant.

Rusty Howard (2-1) pitched a seven-hitter, allowing only one earned run for Grant (3-7, 2-3).

Justin Salazar had two of the Lancers’ three hits, a second-inning double and fourth-inning single.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Taft 10, San Fernando 2--Senior Keri Borzello was two for three with three RBIs and scored twice for Taft (6-1, 1-0) in the Northwest Valley Conference game at Woodland Hills.

Alemany 10, Notre Dame 0--Tammy Alcantar was two for four with three RBIs, including a double and her second home run of the season for the Indians.

Anngela Hallak had three hits and two RBIs. Sophie Contreraz posted her ninth shutout of the season on a two hitter.

L.A. Baptist 20, Marshall Fundamental 0--Amber Larson pitched a two-hitter, and Christine Johnson had four hits for L.A. Baptist in the Alpha League game.

Larson struck out 13 and walked two for the Knights (4-2, 1-1). Johnson added two RBIs and two runs scored.

Agoura 1, Westlake 0--Heather Hascall tripled with two out in the bottom of the seventh, then scored on an infield single by Lisa Kapp in a Marmonte League game.

Megan Kenny (2-7) pitched a no-hitter with one strikeout.

Western Christian 8, Village Christian 2--The Crusaders (3-6, 1-1) walked five and hit two batters on their way to an Alpha League defeat. Denise Yunoos pitched a complete game for Western Christian (3-6, 1-0).

Simi Valley 4, Royal 1--Sara Griffin pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Griffin also was two for four, including a double. Tracy Hansen was two for four, including a run-scoring double to highlight a three-run sixth. Julie Difatta and Dana Skinner also had RBIs.

La Reina 7, Oak Park 0--Jaye Brant was four for four, drove in a run and also scored in the Tri-Valley League game for the Regents (8-2, 1-0), winners of seven in a row, at Oak Park.

Glendale 8, Canyon 7--Darleen Anderson’s run-scoring double in the top of the ninth decided the nonleage game. Cyndee Bennett had a bases-loaded triple in the second inning for Glendale (-2-1).

COLLEGE TENNIS

CS Northridge 9, Cal State Long Beach 0--Monica Kocian beat Farrah Tierney, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and all the other Matador victories were decided in two sets.
