SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Troy became the last county team to fall from the unbeaten ranks, as Canyon pitcher Corey Cruz stymied the Warriors with a two-hit, 7-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

Cruz (5-0) was on target all game. The right-handed senior struck out nine and walked two in the first-round contest of the Anaheim Lions Easter Tournament. He retired 12 consecutive Troy batters at one point.

Canyon (8-3) advanced to the second round, where it will meet Kennedy, a 16-7 winner over Savanna, at 7 p.m. Monday. Troy (9-1-1) will meet the Rebels at 1 p.m. Monday. Both games will be at Glover Stadium. “(Cruz) is the kind of guy who’s not overpowering,” Canyon Coach Michael Najera said. “He has to hit his spots with a good curve. He’s smart, and if he hits his spots and we play good defense, he’s going to be in the game.”

Jim Hostetler, Troy’s 6-foot-6 junior right-hander, fought Cruz to a standstill until his team’s defensive lapses started in the fourth inning.

With one out and the bases loaded in the fourth, Canyon’s Scott Redfox hit a potential double-play ball to shortstop Brian Logan. Logan’s throw got Gunnar Strunz at second, but Nick Ruzzi’s relay throw to first was wide and in the dirt, allowing two Comanche runs to score.

Canyon took a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Hostetler allowed two Comanches to reach second and third on a pair of walks and a wild pitch. With two outs, Royce Valent hit a grounder to Logan, who threw past first baseman Craig Weinreich for two more Comanche runs.

Another pair of Troy errors and a sacrifice grounder by Rick Judy put Comanche runners on second and third again in the sixth inning. James Jekums scored on Redfox’s bloop single to right field, and Josh Gutierrez scored from third on Kent Miller’s sacrifice fly to left.

Meanwhile, Cruz was keeping Troy’s batters off stride with his breaking pitches. After Ruzzi’s lead-off double in the first, Cruz retired 12 in a row until walking Bryan Burchit leading off the fifth inning.

“(Cruz) did a great job for us,” Najera said. “He’s turned out to be our ace. He pitched on the (junior varsity) last year, and we hoped he could step up. He’s a Tommy John-type of pitcher.”
