1993 PREP BASKETBALL LOS ANGELES TIMES ALL-STARS : 20 Top Players Are Honored for Excellence on the Court : Boys: Crossroads’ Croshere, Fairfax’s Foster and Hamilton’s Garnett lead selections to the elite squad.

There’s a reason that Crossroads center Austin Croshere, Fairfax guard Robert Foster and Hamilton guard Marlon Garnett have received scholarships to play at Division I colleges in the fall.

Despite often being double- and triple-teamed, Croshere continued to be one of the most dominating centers in the Southern Section. Foster became one of the best point guards in the City Section and Garnett was one of the top outside shooters.

These players were among the 10 selected to The Times’ 1993 Westside all-star team. The players selected to the first team will be honored at a breakfast April 18 at the Guest Quarters Suite Hotel in Santa Monica. The player and coach of the year will be announced at the breakfast.

Selections were based on a poll of Westside-area coaches.

Here is a look at the first-team selections:

Hassan Booker, University--He was one of the area’s most consistent players, averaging 21 points and 12.9 rebounds for the Warriors. A 6-8 forward, he often controlled play under the basket.

Luke Buffum, Beverly Hills--Although he is only a junior, the 6-7 center is being recruited by Kansas, Arizona, Stanford and North Carolina-Charlotte. Buffum made 65% of his shots from the field and averaged 26 points and 8.9 rebounds. He made the All-Southern Section Division II team and was selected to three all-tournament teams.

Austin Croshere, Crossroads--Croshere signed in November with Providence, but remained a competitive player even with his future decided. A returning Times all-star, he averaged 22.2 points and 18.1 rebounds. He also was selected to the Southern Section Division IV team for the second consecutive season.

Travon Dugar, Crossroads--Although teammates Croshere and Bakir Allen received the most attention after signing with Division I schools, Dugar was the Roadrunners’ most consistent scorer and playmaker. Overlooked by recruiters because of his size, the 5-6 point guard made things happen, averaging 15 points and 9.2 assists. He also made the Southern Section Division IV second team.

Chris Ellison, Culver City--Ellison was as tough to stop on the court as he was on the football field. One of the fastest players with the ball, he averaged 14 points and nine assists. He also was selected to the Southern Section Division III second team.

Robert Foster, Fairfax--Foster was one of three players from the Southland to sign early with Indiana. He averaged 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and seven assists.

Marlon Garnett, Hamilton--Garnett had an impressive season despite playing for Hamilton, which had a down year. The 6-3 senior guard averaged 26 points and seven assists and was selected to the City 4-A team. He scored 35 points in Hamilton’s loss to two-time champion Westchester. Garnett signed last fall to play for Santa Clara.

Terrell Hickmon, St. Bernard--After missing nearly half the season because of chicken pox and injuries, Hickmon returned to average 18 points and two assists. His scoring helped the Vikings reach the Southern Section Division IV-AA championship game. He also made the Southern Section Division IV first team.

Jason Sanders, Westchester--Sanders was the remaining starter from Westchester’s two City championship teams. He scored 17.9 points a game and led a mostly underclassmen team to the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Sanders also was selected to the City 4-A team for the second consecutive season.

James Turner, Palisades--After transferring from Thacher, a small school in Ojai, Turner quickly adapted to large-school competition. He averaged 13.8 points and 14.5 rebounds. Turner also competes on the volleyball team.
