Area Track Teams to Compete in Arcadia

Several athletes from the South Bay will compete in the 26th annual Arcadia Invitational track meet Saturday at Arcadia High.

Field events start at 4 p.m. and running events at 6:35 p.m.

The largest contingents from the area will be from Hawthorne, Morningside and Inglewood highs.

Morningside, which finished as state runner-up in the boys’ and girls’ divisions last season, is expected to make a strong showing.

The Monarch boys will be led by Edward Turner in the long jump, Shawn Shamsia-deen in the 110-meter hurdles, and their 400 and 1,600 relay teams. The top girls competing for Morningside will be Felecia Williams in the 100, Jaronda White in the 400 and the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Hawthorne’s top individuals among the boys include Marquise Jones in the 110 hurdles and Damon Oliver in the 400. The girls’ team will be led by Porchia King in the 400. Hawthorne will also be represented by boys and girls teams in the 400 and 1,600 relays.

The Inglewood boys’ team will be led by Leandrew Childs in the long jump and Brandon Crockett in the 100. Both will also run for the Sentinels in the 400 relay.

In distance events, Peninsula will be represented by Jaime Artzner in the 1,600 and Molly Mehlberg in the 3,200.

St. Bernard is entered in three events, including Olympia Scott in the triple jump, Kamara Mayberry in the 800 and the boys’ 1,600 relay.

After finishing third in the West Coast Conference championships for the sixth consecutive season, the Loyola Marymount women’s tennis team will play Chaminade University today in Honolulu.

The Lions (10-9) were led at the conference championships by Kelly McMillion and Amy Okum, who won consolation titles, and the doubles team of Lara Labetich and Vicki Cordova, who also won a consolation title.

The Lions will return home Tuesday to play host to the University of the Pacific in a nonconference match at 2 p.m.

The Loyola men’s tennis team, which finished fifth in the conference championships, will also play at Chaminade today before returning home to meet Westmont at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The Loyola Marymount baseball team, which has lost four consecutive games, will play at Cal State Fullerton in a nonconference game at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Loyola (15-22) lost to the Titans, 12-4, in February. The Titans (22-9) are ranked third in the nation by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball magazines.

Loyola, which lost to Cal State San Bernardino, 18-8, on Wednesday, has been led by outfielder Mike Peters, who is batting .311.

Designated hitter Jesse Ibarra leads the West Coast Conference in home runs with 10 and runs batted in with 31.

The third annual Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Foundation golf tournament has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. on April 26 at the Bear Creek course in Murietta.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit recreation programs in Hawthorne, including renovation of the lodge at the Hawthorne Youth camp.

The Torrance Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a novice tennis tournament from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 12-15 at the Las Canches Tennis Club, 25924 Rolling Hills Road, in Torrance.

The cost is $18 for Torrance residents or $23 for non-residents.

Entry forms are at parks throughout Torrance and the department office, 3031 Torrance Blvd.

Registration is under way for beginning beach volleyball classes for adults. Sessions start April 24 and May 2 at the Hermosa Beach Pier courts.

The cost is $20 for Hermosa Beach residents or $25 for non-residents.

Co-ed softball leagues for adults will start in late April at Holly and Jim Thorpe parks in Hawthorne.

The cost is $250 a team, plus a $35 forfeit deposit. Teams must also pay $9 before each game for umpires.
