FIRST-TEAM PROFILES

Latisha Beam: FORWARD, PALMDALE

A two-time All-Valley and All-Southern Section Division I selection, Beam averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds. She was named to the All-Golden League team three times. Beam, a gifted athlete who formed a potent duo with teammate Kim Schielke, is being recruited by Loyola Marymount, San Diego State and Cal State Dominguez Hills, among others.

Shaneya Harris: GUARD, KENNEDY

Harris was the most dominating player in the Valley this season, leading the Golden Cougars to the City Section 4-A Division semifinal, where they lost to eventual champion Crenshaw by four points. Harris was at her best in the playoffs, averaging 31.6 points in the three postseason games. She was the City 4-A co-player of the year and an All-State Division I selection.

Lindy James: FORWARD, VILLAGE CHRISTIAN

And a child shall lead them--to a league championship, then to the playoffs. James, a freshman, burst onto the high school scene by topping the Crusaders in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. She was the catalyst for Village Christian’s undefeated season in the Alpha League. James averaged 15.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots.

Shannon Martin: CENTER, HART

Martin’s last season of basketball was a memorable one. The 6-foot-1 senior led the Indians to an undefeated (12-0) Foothill League championship and was the league’s player of the year for the second consecutive year. But her basketball career ended with a playoff loss to Quartz Hill, and now Martin will focus on volleyball. She accepted a volleyball scholarship to Arizona.

Darvena Merritt: FORWARD, NORTH HOLLYWOOD

Slated to play shooting guard when the season began, the versatile Merritt was moved to power forward when injuries depleted the Huskies’ squad. The junior led the team in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (10.5), was named Mid-Valley League most valuable player and helped North Hollywood advance to the City Section 4-A championship game.

Deanna Nakamura: GUARD, MONROE

The spark plug for a Viking team that reached the City Section 3-A semifinal, Nakamura averaged a rare double-double--12.6 points and 12.2 assists. The 5-4 senior point guard also was Monroe’s most consistent three-point shooter, and won three games with baskets in the final minute of play. Nakamura was the East Valley League MVP and an All-City 3-A selection.

Shannon Nash: GUARD, QUARTZ HILL

The key word for the Rebels was balance. Four senior starters averaged at least eight points and led Quartz Hill to a Division I-A semifinal. The ringleader was Nash, a 5-7 senior and three-time All-Golden League selection. She averaged 13.7 points and 6.0 rebounds, was the team’s most consistent outside shooter and was team offensive MVP for the second consecutive year.

Samantha Rigley: GUARD/FORWARD, ALEMANY

The versatile sophomore displayed a multitude of skills--dribbling, passing, rebounding and shooting--while leading the Indians to the Division III-AA final. An All-State sophomore team selection, she averaged 15.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists. After losing to Alemany in a playoff semifinal, El Dorado Coach Gary Raya called Rigley “the best overall player we’ve faced all year.”

Kim Schielke: GUARD, PALMDALE

Schielke is a three-time All-Valley selection and All-Southern Section Division I selection. This season, she earned Division I All-State honors as well. The 5-10 senior shooting guard averaged 20.1 points and 9.1 rebounds. The Falcons’ best three-point bomber, Schielke shot 46% from the field and 72% from the free-throw line. She has accepted a scholarship to UC Santa Barbara.

Lori Talley: GUARD, BELL-JEFF

At 6-1, Talley has the size, vision and court sense to dominate a game with her ballhandling and passing. Her all-around play--she averaged 19.3 points, 8.9 rebounds and 8.0 assists--has college recruiters intrigued. Talley is being recruited by USC, UNLV and Cal State Long Beach. She led the Guards to the Division IV-A championship game and was All-State in Division IV.
