Redondo High Wins in a Breeze, 6-1

The ball, hit by Redondo’s Rick Janssen, swirled high in the wind as Beverly Hills left fielder Jerry Cohen ran in a few steps.

Then Cohen ran back a few steps. Quickly, he went right. Suddenly, he swiveled left.

Too late. The ball bounced off Cohen’s glove, and by the time he picked it up and threw it to the shortstop, two Redondo runners had scored and Janssen was standing on second base.

That third-inning play was all the Seahawks would need to beat the host Normans, 6-1, in an Ocean League game on Wednesday.

Right-hander Scott Albin (4-1), pitched splendidly, giving up five hits and two walks and striking out five in a complete-game victory. Beverly Hills right-hander Scott Cukier went the distance and gave up seven hits.

“(Albin’s) strength is throwing strikes, he always throws strikes,” Redondo Coach Tim Ammentorp said.

The only run given up by Albin came in the first inning. Clark Parker Jr. walked and two batters later cleanup hitter Jeremy Booth stroked a double in the left field alley to score Parker.

But Albin settled down and appeared to get stronger after the Seahawks (8-7, 3-2 in league) took the lead.

Beverly Hills (10-4, 4-1) struggled defensively. Shortstop Brandon Hearn committed two of his teams’ four errors in the fourth inning.

His first miscue, on a ground ball by Bobby Cracknell, put Seahawk runners on first and second. The next batter, Dominic Prince, singled through the middle to score designated hitter Pat Mills and give Redondo a 3-1 lead.

With runners on first and third, Prince tried to steal second and was safe when Hearn misplayed the throw. The error allowed Cracknell to score from third.

The Seahawks completed their scoring in the seventh inning when Janssen tripled to drive in two runs.
