NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Muir’s Vaughn Is Player of Year; Wilson’s Miner Also Is Honored

Jacque Vaughn of Muir High and Katie Miner of Wilson were honored as The Times’ San Gabriel Valley boys’ and girls’ basketball players of the year at an awards ceremony Sunday at the Pasadena Holiday Inn.

Vaughn also has been recognized as the winner of the George Yardley Award, presented annually by The Times to the top high school basketball player in Southern California.

Leo Wingett, who guided Wilson to the Southern Section 2-A Division championship, was selected girls’ coach of the year. Rocky Moore, who led Muir to the Southern Section 2-A title, was named boys’ coach of the year. *

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team began the week in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. after winning two of three games against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Pomona (23-17, 11-8 in the CCAA) has a half-game lead over UC Riverside (9-7) and a one-game lead over San Luis Obispo (9-8) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-9).

Grant Stephens has stolen 19 bases for Pomona and has 47 in his career, five shy of the school record set by Kevin Thornhill in 1974-75. *

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team signed three players to national letters of intent last week, including guards Lori Talley and identical twins Tiffany and Taffany Maxwell.

The 6-foot-1 Talley averaged 19.8 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for Bellarmine-Jefferson High of Burbank last season.

The 5-7 Tiffany Maxwell averaged 13 points and four rebounds for Long Beach Millikan. Taffany, also 5-7, averaged 10 points and four rebounds for Millikan.

The Pomona men’s team signed Greg Evans, a 6-3 swingman who averaged 18 points a game for Golden West College. *

Mt. San Antonio College will induct 10 former athletes, coaches and administrators into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday in ceremonies at Cal Poly Pomona.

The inductees include longtime basketball coach Gene Victor, Marie Mills (administrator), Elizabeth Green (women’s athletics), Terry Martin (wrestling), Gervaise McGraw (track), Claudie Miner (football) Paula Jean Meyers Pope (diving), Bill Stoneman (baseball), Pete Williams (basketball) and Don Shy (football and track).

Rock star Rod Stewart is scheduled to play for his Exiles II semipro soccer team in a National Cup over-30 championship match Saturday at 3 p.m. at Monrovia High.

The Exiles II will play the Valley Fury. The L.A. Exiles, an under-30 team sponsored by Stewart, will play either the Orange County Vanguard or the L.A. Danubia clubs for the Pacific Soccer League championship at 5:45.

The Arcadia National Little League is seeking former players, coaches and officials for its 40th anniversary celebration May 1 at the National Guard armory in Arcadia.

The league was founded in 1953 and has served as a training ground for several major league players, including Todd Worrell of the Dodgers.

High school soccer players are eligible to apply for college scholarships worth $1,000 each that will be presented by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the Ford Motor Co.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants ages 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division and winners will qualify for the state championships in September in San Diego.

The Pasadena Games also will include race walking and tennis for disabled athletes and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.
