Oxnard’s Garcia Cites Conflict, Quits Baseball Job

Dan Garcia has resigned as baseball coach at Oxnard High and has been replaced by Jack Dalton, a former assistant at the school who will serve until the end of the season.

Garcia, in his second year as head coach, said he planned to resign at the end of the season but hastened his decision because he “did not see eye to eye” with Principal Rick Rezinas.

“It’s a personal thing between him and me,” Garcia said. “I have a great relationship with the kids.”

Rezinas said he is unaware of any conflict between him and Garcia.

“I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Rezinas said. “This is a voluntary resignation. He had disciplined the team recently and I supported him on that.”

Oxnard is 3-8 and last in the Channel League at 0-7. Last season, the Yellowjackets were 5-16 and finished seventh in the eight-team league at 4-9-1. Garcia will remain as a physical education teacher at the school.

Dalton, who also teaches at Oxnard, served as an assistant to Tony Diaz, the coach from 1986 to 1991. Diaz, the school’s athletic director, said he will assist Dalton for the remainder of the season. The school is accepting applications for a new coach, Diaz said.

Garcia’s resignation leaves the school without head coaches in two major sports. Jack Davis resigned after last season, his 14th as the school’s football coach.

Diaz said a football coach is expected to be selected within a few weeks.
