Section Teams to Meet in Basketball

A handful of area basketball standouts have been named to the roster of a City Section all-star team that will take on a team of area Southern Section stars at Pierce College on Saturday night at 8.

Leading the City boys’ team are Shawn Bankhead of Cleveland and Joe Wyatt of Kennedy, both All-City 4-A Division and Times’ All-Valley selections. Demond Callahan of Canoga Park, an All-City 3-A choice, also is on the team.

The City boys are coached by Jeff Davis of Canoga Park and Kenny Lee of Van Nuys. The Southern Section team will be coached by Dean Bradshaw of Simi Valley, The Times’ Ventura County coach of the year.

A girls’ game will be played at 6. The City team will be coached by Donis Bailey of Kennedy and the Southern Section squad will be coached by Dave Murphy of Simi Valley.

The games will pit players from 18 San Fernando Valley City schools against players from the 60-plus Southern Section schools in Ventura County, Glendale-Burbank and the San Fernando, Simi, Santa Clarita, Conejo and Ojai valleys.

Cycling

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys, a member of the Miller Lite Cycling Team, recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in the San Diego Race Weekend road race events.

Rogers placed sixth Saturday and fifth Sunday. Teammate Shaun Cronkhite of Chatsworth placed sixth Sunday.

Special Olympics

More than 1,200 Special Olympic athletes from Verdugo, San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys on Saturday will compete in the Tri-Valley Games at Glendale High.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:30 a.m. Events--swimming, basketball, bowling, gymnastics, softball, tennis, equestrian and track and field--will take place until 3 p.m.

Tennis

Jimmy Connors, Ilie Nastase and Roscoe Tanner will head a 12-player field in a $150,000 tennis tournament at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, the club has announced. The tournament, called the Sherwood Championships, will be a 35-and-over event, Sept. 29-Oct. 3.

The $150,000 total purse will be the largest ever for a 35-and-over men’s event, the club said.
