PREP ROUNDUP : Wakeham Leads Irvine Past Woodbridge in Volleyball

Greg Wakeham had 12 kills and six aces to help the Irvine boys’ volleyball team defeat host Woodbridge, 15-13, 15-4, 15-7, and move into sole possession of first place in the Sea View League.

Brent Eldridge had nine kills and six blocks and Eric Phernambucq had 37 assists and three aces for the Vaqueros (10-3, 9-1 in league), ranked No. 7 in Orange County.

Woodbridge drops to 8-6, 8-2.

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Esperanza 3, Cypress 0--Paul Nihipali and Brad Goldston each had 12 kills for host Esperanza, which remains undefeated in league (9-1, 4-0).

Foothill 3, El Dorado 0--Rich Lambourne had 18 kills and Spencer Campbell had 42 assists for host Foothill (10-1, 4-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 3, Laguna Hills 1--Bob Jamison had 13 kills to lead visiting Laguna Beach (9-1, 6-0), 15-7, 14-16, 15-3, 15-3.

Trabuco Hills 3, Century 0--Austin Woffinden had 30 assists to lead Trabuco Hills in a 15-0, 15-5, 15-9 victory.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, Mission Viejo 0--Evan Alexander had nine kills and five blocks and Eric McKelvie had 35 assists for Capistrano Valley (12-0, 6-0), which won, 15-0, 15-6, 15-7.

El Toro 3, Mater Dei 0--Mark Pozsgai had 14 kills in Mater Dei’s (5-7) loss to visiting El Toro, 15-13, 15-13, 15-4.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 3, Marina 0--Nick Ziegler had nine kills to lead Huntington Beach (12-0, 10-0), 15-7, 15-8, 15-6.

Ocean View 3, Westminster 2--Brian Grace had 34 kills and Jim Harris had 41 assists for Ocean View, which won, 13-15, 15-6, 15-10, 12-15, 15-7. Ocean View is 6-6, 4-6.

In Academy League softball:

Liberty Christian 13, St. Margaret’s 6--Jenn Craven hit a three-run homer in the third inning for host Liberty Christian (7-5, 3-0).

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 13, Anza Hamilton 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Candle Silva pitched a one-hitter, giving up only an infield single with two outs in the fifth for SCC (11-2, 5-1). Silva struck out 13 of the 16 batters she faced. Silva also had two doubles and one run batted in.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 4, Tustin 3--Shye Nakabayashi singled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to lead host Irvine (17-4, 8-0). Alleah Poulson had a home run for the Vaqueros.

Woodbridge 6, Corona del Mar 0--Debbie Nasitka had two hits, including a double, drove in two runs, scored one and stole three bases for visiting Woodbridge (17-5, 7-1).

Newport Harbor 6, Saddleback 5--Jessica Bozeman hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to lead Newport Harbor (11-5, 5-3). Jill Nelsen and Kim DeMayo each had three hits for the Sailors.

Saddleback scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.

Santa Margarita 3, University 0--Pitcher Lise Delligatta, who went two for three with one RBI, had 15 strikeouts for host Santa Margarita (6-14, 4-4). Teammate Cheryl Bennett had two hits and one RBI.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 3, Dana Hills 1--Third baseman Courtney Kerley had a home run for Mission Viejo (9-11, 2-2).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 4, Santa Ana 0--Danny Rodriguez pitched a one-hitter, giving up only a single in the fourth inning, for Fountain Valley (14-4, 7-1). Rodriguez struck out seven and walked one. Santa Ana is 0-8 in league.

Mater Dei 5, Capistrano Valley 0--Jennifer Clark had 10 strikeouts and Marie O’Beck had a double for Mater Dei (12-2, 4-0). Capistrano Valley drops to 7-9.

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Western 12, Magnolia 6--Mack Sunthonlap swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, to lead Western (7-7, 3-3).
