A pregnant woman and her four children died Monday when a fire swept through their apartment, firefighters said.

Investigators were trying to learn what caused the blaze, which erupted early Monday morning, according to the North Monterey County Fire Protection District.

Forty people were evacuated from the apartment building, said Gina Valdez, a secretary at the fire district. There were no other injuries.
