VENTURA : Off-Track Betting Center Approved

The Ventura Planning Commission on Tuesday approved a proposal to build an off-track betting center at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

The satellite wagering facility would be a two-story, 35,000-square foot building that would house 60-inch television sets broadcasting live TV simulcasts from major Southern California racetracks.

“I think the patrons are going to be ecstatic,” said Ventura County Fair Manager Mike Paluszak. “They’ve looked forward to having the building.”

The building would be a permanent home for the fair’s off-track betting operations, which are housed in three buildings at the fairgrounds. Satellite wagering operations are moved to a tent during the fair.

Because of its larger size, the new building also has the potential of increasing off-track betting operations as much as 30%, Paluszak said.

Off-track betting attracts about 800 customers daily, and accounts for about $2.5-million of the fair’s $5.9-million operating budget, Paluszak said.
