AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Stieb Is Activated by the White Sox
Pitcher Dave Stieb was activated by the Chicago White Sox and automatically received a $450,000 raise. Stieb, who had been on the 15-day disabled list, on Dec. 8 agreed to a contract that called for a $300,000 salary but the deal automatically increased to $750,000 after one day on the active roster.
Stieb opened the season on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his right elbow. He is scheduled to start today against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Left-hander Dennis Powell was brought up by the Seattle Mariners from Calgary of the Pacific Coast League to replace Chris Bosio, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken left collarbone suffered in Tuesday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks. Powell will start in Bosio’s place against the Yankees Sunday in New York.
