Titans Are Easy Choice for St. Clair

Sonora basketball player Chris St. Clair never took an official recruiting visit to Cal State Fullerton, but he knew it was the place for him.

The 6-foot St. Clair, Orange County’s top point guard, signed a letter of intent with the Titans on Wednesday, turning down an offer from UC Irvine.

He also considered Boise State, Cal Poly Pomona and UC Riverside.

“It came down to Fullerton and Irvine,” said St. Clair, who averaged 21.9 points and 4.5 assists last season. “I wanted to stay local, and I really wanted to play in the Big West.”

St. Clair visited Irvine and Boise State, but said he didn’t need to take a recruiting trip to Fullerton.

“I’ve been over there before (to play pickup games),” he said. “I really like Coach (Brad) Holland a lot. A lot of the freshmen they are bringing in are pretty good.

“I liked Irvine too. I liked Coach (Rod) Baker, and the campus was really nice. After I weighed the pros and cons, I felt more comfortable at Fullerton.”

St. Clair could help the Titans right away. He’s the only point guard of the five players Fullerton has signed. Aaron Sunderland, the Titans’ point guard last season, has used up his eligibility.

St. Clair also led the county in three-point shooting last season, making 43 of 84 shots for 51.2%.

“The coaches say the decision (to sit out as) a redshirt is up to me,” St. Clair said.
