COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : County Teams Win Titles in Swimming

The Orange Coast women and Golden West men won State swimming titles Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas.

Scoring 560 points to 409 for Cuesta, Orange Coast won its fifth consecutive state title and ninth in 10 years under Coach Don Watson.

Brandi Kossub set a state record in the 100-yard backstroke, winning in 58.48. Michelle Quigley won the 100 freestyle (53.08), and Orange Coast relays won the 200 medley (1:51.66) and 200 freestyle (1:39.08).

The Golden West men’s team finished with 702 points. Orange Coast (326) was second.

For the Rustlers, Alex Beaver won the 200 butterfly (1:55.53), his third victory in the meet; Todd McClung won the 200 breaststroke (2:03.27); Rafael Guijarro won the 1,650 freestyle (15:59.21), and the 400 freestyle relay was a winner in 3:05.43.

In the Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis championships:

Saddleback sweeps--Max Alvarez won the singles title and combined with Nils Schyllander to take the doubles title.

Alvarez, the No. 2-seeded player, beat unseeded Erik Berg of Saddleback, 6-3, 6-3, for the championship. Berg defeated top-seeded Schyllander, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.

Alvarez and Schyllander beat teammates Danny Wood and Steen Lundblad, 7-5, 7-5, in the doubles final.

In the Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis championships:

Orange Coast wins doubles title--Fiona Jones and Shannon Curren of Orange Coast defeated teammates Amy Cook and Toowee Cao, 7-6, 6-1, in the doubles final.

In the Orange Empire Conference track and field men’s championships:

Golden West finishes third--Mike McClintock won the javelin with a throw of 200 feet and Adrian Brown won the 110 hurdles (14.85) for Golden West, which had 76 1/2 points. Riverside (253) won the meet.

Fidel Savala of Rancho Santiago won the 10,000 in 32:12.41 , and T.J. Cody of Fullerton won the high jump at 7 feet.

In the Orange Empire Conference track and field women’s championships:

Fullerton finishes third--Shonna Bernard of Fullerton won the 100-meter hurdles (14.76) and the 400 hurdles (1:02.47) at San Diego Mesa. Danielle Brown of Fullerton won the triple jump (39-3 1/4). Riverside won the title with 228 points. San Diego (179) was second and Fullerton (69) third.
