Iva Majoli, a 15-year-old from Croatia, upset 10th-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the Italian Open at Rome. The center-court match was interrupted by rain for 30 minutes. In another surprise, Italy’s Silvia Farina defeated No. 13 Lori McNeil of the United States, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Mary Pierce of France, No. 11, struggled before beating Shaun Stafford, 6-4, 7-5.
