BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Cardinals’ Pagnozzi Sidelined 3-6 Weeks

St. Louis Cardinal catcher Tom Pagnozzi will undergo arthroscopic surgery for torn cartilage in his left knee in the next few days and will be sidelined three to six weeks, the team said. Pagnozzi said he has had limited mobility behind the plate since injuring the knee a couple of weeks ago. He also has been struggling at the plate, batting .175 with two home runs.

To replace Pagnozzi on the roster, the Cardinals purchased the contract of catcher Erik Pappas from triple-A Louisville.

Nolan Ryan was scratched Monday from his next scheduled start for Texas against Oakland and will return home to have his left hip examined. Ryan aggravated the hip Friday night at Kansas City, when he lasted only four innings in his first start since returning from the disabled list with a right knee injury.

The Detroit Tigers have activated pitcher Bill Gullickson from the disabled list, and he is scheduled to pitch tonight against Toronto. To make room on the roster, the Tigers optioned pitcher Greg Gohr to Toledo. . . . The addition of expansion teams in Colorado and Florida have helped give baseball an increase of 29.2% in attendance, compared with last season. The 28 clubs have drawn 12,266,693 fans, an average of of 29,630 a game. Attendance at this time last year was 9,497,130.
