VERNON : 26 Slightly Injured as MTA Bus Collides With Van

At least 26 people received minor injuries when a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus on which they were riding was struck by a van in Vernon on Wednesday night, authorities said.

Eleven of those were treated at nearby hospitals for “bumps and bruises,” said Battalion Chief Gary Wiskus of the Vernon Fire Department. The rest were treated at the scene, he said.

The bus, which was traveling south on Alameda Street, was about to detour around a stalled freight train to make a left turn on 41st street when it was hit by the van, said Greg Davy, an MTA spokesman. The train was on tracks that run between the lanes of Alameda.

About 60 people were aboard the bus, Davy said.

The bus and the van were only slightly damaged in the accident, near where Alameda splits into a divided street, he said.

Vernon is about five miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
