10 Groups Win Awards From Times

Ten nonprofit groups were named Wednesday as winners of the Los Angeles Times Valley and Ventura County editions’ 1993 Community Partnership Awards.

About 450 community leaders and volunteers attended a luncheon at which the awards were announced. The ceremony was hosted by Jeffrey S. Klein, president of the Times Valley and Ventura County editions, at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel. Each of the honorees received a $5,000 grant from The Times.

Lodge award--The Encino Lodge of B’Nai B’rith won an award for its work distributing more than $750,000 worth of food, clothing and other supplies to agencies in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys. A story in Times editions of May 13 misstated the figure.

The awards were established in 1990 to recognize nonprofit organizations providing outstanding services in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys and Ventura County.

About 260 groups applied in six categories: social services, health services, youth and education, senior citizens, environment and ecology services, and cultural arts.

The recipients were:

* Children of the Night of Van Nuys, for work with sexually abused children

* Encino Lodge of B’Nai B’rith of Encino, which gave more than $1,500 of food, soap and clothes to about 50 organizations

* Foothill Area Community Relations Unit of the Los Angeles Police Department of Pacoima, which gives Christmas baskets of food and toys to needy families

* Santa Clarita Child & Family Development Center of Canyon Country, for its work with emotionally and developmentally impaired preschool children

* Sepulveda United Methodist Church of North Hills, for a program to feed the homeless

* Teen Age Grief Inc. (TAG) of Panorama City, which provides support for needy teen-agers

* Alisa Ann Ruch California Burn Foundation of Canoga Park, for its camp for children with burn injuries

* Catholic Charities Department of Aging Services of Camarillo, which provides support for senior citizens

* Foundation for Quality Housing Opportunities Inc., of North Hollywood, for efforts to build affordable senior citizen housing

* Camarillo Hospice Inc., of Camarillo, which helps the mentally ill and their families
