Loyola Plays Host to Rival Pepperdine

The Loyola Marymount baseball team will play Pepperdine in a three-game series today and Saturday in Westchester.

The teams will play a single game at 2:30 p.m. today and a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

Pepperdine, which clinched its third consecutive West Coast Conference title last week, is 38-13 and 22-5 in the conference. Loyola is 22-31 and tied with Santa Clara for third place in the conference at 13-14.

Loyola lost two of three games in the first series between the teams in March at Malibu.

Pepperdine enters the series with a five-game winning streak; the Lions have lost four consecutive games.

The Lions have been led by sophomore outfielder Mike Peters, who is batting .368. The Waves have a conference-leading ERA of 2.56 and fielding percentage of .971. Pitcher Steve Duda is at 10-3 with a 1.81 ERA and Jason LeBlanc is 7-2 with a 2.30 ERA.

Cal State Dominguez Hills has narrowed its list of candidates for athletic director to six.

Two of the six were interviewed this week, including former Florida Atlantic Athletic Director Jack Mehl and senior associate athletic director John Wadas of San Diego State.

Interim Athletic Director Louis Murdock, who is also vice president for student affairs at Dominguez Hills, said the other four candidates will be interviewed next week.

“Personally, I am excited about all of the finalists,” Murdock said. “In my opinion, this will be the most important position filled in student affairs at (Dominguez Hills) for the next five years.”

Murdock said the school expects to fill the position in the next three weeks.

Four Dominguez Hills softball players were named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. second team.

Senior first baseman Melissa Punch, who led the Toros with a .393 batting average, leads the selections. The other Toro selections are junior catcher Oahn Kachele, senior outfielder Tina Baca and junior utility player Julie DeJaifre.

Dominguez Hills finished 21-26-1 and in fifth place in the conference at 9-16.

Registration is under way for a co-ed slow-pitch softball league for adults, sponsored by the Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department, that starts this month in Inglewood.

The cost is $100 a team.

The fourth annual Seven Aside Soccer Tournament for men and women will be May 29-30 at Dominguez Hills.

There will be men’s 18 and older and 35 and older divisions and a women’s open division.

The cost is $150 a team.

More than 150 athletes will compete in a masters track and field meet from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Cal State Long Beach.

The meet is sponsored by the Southern California Striders.

The cost is $12 to compete in one event and $6 for each additional event. Admission is free.

The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring four trips to Dodger games for youths in grades six through nine.

The first game is May 26 against the San Diego Padres, and there are also games June 21 against the Houston Astros, July 24 against the New York Mets and Aug. 11 against the Colorado Rockies.

The cost is $8, including admission and bus transportation.

Parents must sign a permission slip for their children to attend.
