Mira Costa, North Play Quarterfinal Matches in Volleyball

Ocean League champion Mira Costa High and Pioneer League champion North Torrance will play quarterfinal-round matches at 7:30 tonight in the Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoffs.

Second-seeded Mira Costa (20-0) travels to North Hollywood to play Harvard-Westlake in a Division I match. Outside hitter Matt Walker had 15 kills Tuesday to lead Mira Costa past Alemany, 15-8, 15-13, 15-8, in a second-round match in Mission Hills. The Mustangs have not lost a game in the playoffs.

Harvard-Westlake, the Mission League champion, advanced with a 12-15, 15-9, 15-13, 15-6 victory over San Marcos of Santa Barbara.

North (14-2) will play host to third-seeded Upland in a Division II match. It will be the third consecutive home playoff match for the Saxons, who beat Gahr of Cerritos, 15-7, 15-5, 13-15, 15-2, on Tuesday.

Upland, the Baseline League champion, advanced with a victory over Rancho Alamitos.

Three Loyola Marymount baseball players have been named to the West Coast Conference first team by conference coaches.

Junior first baseman Anthony Napolitano, sophomore outfielder Mike Peters and sophomore utility player Jesse Ibarra were honored.

Napolitano finished with a .315 batting average, five home runs and 38 runs batted in.

Peters led Loyola with a .365 batting average, was second on the team with seven home runs and had 36 RBIs.

Ibarra batted .299 and led the conference with 17 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Six other Lions were honorable-mention selections: pitchers Shane Bowers, Shawn Hammett and Ryan Graves, catcher Andy Biaggi, third baseman Jeff Ciccarella and outfielder Mike Seal.

Teams from fire and police departments in the South Bay will meet in a charity football game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at El Camino College Stadium.

Proceeds go to the club’s South Bay Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse. The cost is $6.
