Cypress : Fire Injures Worker, 2 Firefighters
A worker suffered second-degree burns to his face, arms and hands and two firemen suffered minor burns Friday when an electrical spark caused a condominium fire.
Michael Saad, 39, and another workman were spraying varnish on a set of cabinets when a spark from a refrigerator ignited the fire early Friday afternoon, said Kathleen Cha, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Fire Department. The fire immediately flashed over Saad, but the other workman was not injured, Cha said.
Saad was taken to La Palma Community Hospital. The two firefighters were treated and released from Los Alamitos Medical Center. The identities of the two firefighters were not available.
Firefighters controlled the fire within 30 minutes and saved the adjoining units. However, the condominium was nearly gutted, Cha said. A damage estimate was placed at $115,000.
“The spark flashed very, very rapidly,” Cha said.
“When doing any type of varnishing or refinishing of furniture, the rooms should be fully ventilated, all electrical appliances turned off and pilot lights out.”
The residents of the condominium, at 9683 Walker St., were not at home at the time of the fire.
