The Southern Section releaguing committee this week ratified new league alignments for 1994-98, moving a step closer to establishing a league of area parochial powers in all sports but football.

The committee has forwarded its league alignments to the section council, which is expected to formally implement the recommendations at a meeting in October.

The section last spring moved from two- to four-year releaguing cycles, though schools are allowed to petition for relief during the four-year span.

As expected, there were few changes from the initial parochial plan designed by the Catholic Athletic Assn. several months ago.

In boys’ sports except football, the Mission League will consist of Alemany, Chaminade, Crespi, Harvard-Westlake, Loyola, Notre Dame and St. Francis. Flintridge-Sacred Heart and Louisville will be added in girls’ sports.

Alignments change substantially in football:

* In football, the Del Rey League will contain Alemany, Bishop Amat, Crespi, Loyola, St. John Bosco and St. Paul.

* The Mission League in football will be composed of Bishop Montgomery, Chaminade, Notre Dame, Serra, St. Bernard and St. Francis.

* Harvard-Westlake will play football in the Camino Real League along with Cantwell, St. Anthony, St. Monica and Verbum Dei.

* Bell-Jeff and St. Genevieve will play football in the Santa Fe League with Cathedral, La Salle, Mary Star, Murphy, Pius X and Salesian.

Public and parochial releaguing in Orange County remained unsettled, section Commissioner Stan Thomas said.

Leagues from the Valley and Ventura County regions were ratified with no discussion or objection, Thomas said.

The Frontier League will add Malibu, and the Foothill League will add a new Santa Clarita school that will open in 1994 with grades 9-10. The school is expected to join the league in the fall of 1996.

A new Small Schools league will be formed consisting of Antelope Valley Christian, Apple Valley Christian, Lancaster Bethel Christian and Victor Valley Christian.

Also, Buckley was moved from the Delphic to the Liberty League.
