From Staff and Wire Reports

Marcus Allen said Wednesday that one of the reasons he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs was to play with quarterback Joe Montana, the three-time Super Bowl most valuable player who left the San Francisco 49ers six weeks ago.

“You’d have to be crazy not to take advantage of an opportunity to play with Joe Montana,” said Allen, the former Raider who signed three one-year contracts with Kansas City. “I want to go to the Super Bowl, and Kansas City does, too. Hopefully, I can help them get there.”

Added Allen: “Chronologically, I’m 33, but I feel very youthful. The last couple of years, I haven’t had much enthusiasm, and it showed in my play.”

Allen declined to discuss his problems with Raider owner Al Davis.

Transit Valley Country Club in suburban Buffalo has suspended its membership committee in the wake of the committee’s decision to reject the application of Sabre goalie Grant Fuhr.

Robert DiVita, the club’s attorney, said that the country club, in Amherst, N.Y., was forming a committee to review its bylaws and constitution, specifically incorporating anti-discrimination language into them.

Fuhr, who is black, was rejected for membership two weeks ago. He implied that his race was a factor in the decision made by the club, which has no black members.

After the publicity, the club reversed its decision and offered Fuhr a membership. Fuhr, who had already joined another club, declined.
