Man Sought in Slaying Kills Self
A driver who committed suicide when he was flagged down by police had earlier killed his girlfriend, Torrance authorities said.
The bodies of Ichio Akaiwa, 66, and Evette Lovingood, 25, were found in Akaiwa’s car after it was pulled over late Thursday, said police Lt. Jack McDonald.
Akaiwa apparently telephoned his estranged wife around 10 p.m. Thursday, told her he had killed his girlfriend and threatened to kill himself, investigators said. She called police, who went to Akaiwa’s home and saw him driving his car nearby. After stopping and surrounding the car, officers found Akaiwa lying across the seat with a .38-caliber revolver in his right hand. Police said he had shot himself once in the head.
Lovingood was shot twice, once in the head and once in the chest.
