PIRU : Fire Burns 140 Acres of Brush Over 24 Hours

Share

Firefighters put out a 140-acre brush fire Monday that had burned for more than 24 hours near Piru, officials said. Investigators were still searching for the cause.

The fire, the largest so far this season, was contained around noon and fully extinguished shortly before 4 p.m., fire dispatcher Annie Ironside said.

Because flames covered rugged hillsides in Warring Canyon, fire engines could not reach the site. Hand crews, helicopters and air tankers all helped to put out the blaze.

On Sunday, up to 350 firefighters battled the blaze as erratic winds pushed it toward the Los Padres National Forest. It was halted less than three miles from U.S. Forest Service land, officials said.

The fire began about 2:20 p.m. Sunday on a rocky hillside above Center Street in Piru and briefly threatened several houses. No buildings burned and there were no injuries.

Firefighters from Ventura County were assisted by crews from Los Angeles County, the California Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.
