Hovsepian to Replace Xanthos as Men’s Tennis Coach at Pierce

Pierce College on Monday selected Aris Hovsepian as men’s tennis coach to replace Paul Xanthos, who coached the Brahmas for nearly three decades.

Hovsepian, 26, is a former Pierce player who served as Xanthos’ assistant the past two seasons. Hovsepian had been hired in May to coach the women’s team, but will now oversee both programs in the newly created position of tennis director.

The school will hire a new women’s coach.

Xanthos, 72, resigned last month after leading Pierce to 23 conference championships in 29 years. Hovsepian, one of Iran’s top junior players before he left his native Tehran nine years ago, played at Pierce in 1990 and ’91 but said he attended the school primarily to learn about coaching from Xanthos.

“I wanted to become more of a coach than a player,” said Hovsepian, one of seven applicants--four of whom were interviewed by Pierce Athletic Director Marian McWilliams. Xanthos had recommended Hovsepian.

“The one disadvantage I had was my age,” Hovsepian said.

“Without Mr. Xanthos, this wouldn’t have happened. I’m very excited. I think this is one of the most prestigious positions for a head coach in California.

“The competition here is among the toughest in the nation. And Pierce has always been near the top.”
