Two homers Wednesday, two more Thursday--a sensational 48 hours for Robby Thompson.

Thompson hit two home runs for the second consecutive game and the Giants erupted for five home runs and a season-high 20 hits Thursday to rout the Colorado Rockies, 17-2, at San Francisco, their eighth victory in nine games.

Barry Bonds added a grand slam to tie teammate Matt Williams for the league lead with 21 homers and Will Clark and Mark Carreon each had two-run shots in a game that made John Burkett (11-2) the National League’s first 11-game winner.

“Robby is locked in,” Manager Dusty Baker said of Thompson, who also had three singles and a walk for his second five-hit performance in 12 days. “Everyone knows it, and you can see it.”

Burkett gave up two runs and seven hits in seven innings, enabling San Francisco to take a nine-game lead over the idle Atlanta Braves.

Thompson, who matched his career high with five hits, never had a multiple-home run game before Wednesday.

Clark aggravated a bruised right wrist while taking a swing in the fourth inning and left the game. His condition is listed as day to day.

Cincinnati 6, San Diego 4--Bobby Kelly hit a homer and two singles and scored the winning run on Chris Sabo’s single in the ninth inning to lift the Reds at San Diego.

Cincinnati beat the Padres for the fifth consecutive time this season. Kevin Mitchell singled in the first to extend his career-best hitting streak to 18 games, the longest current streak in the major leagues.

Fred McGriff hit his 16th homer in the eighth, tying the game, 4-4. But Kelly singled against Roger Mason (0-6) leading off the ninth, moved up on a bunt and scored on Sabo’s single. Bip Roberts’ single drove in another run.
