A CHP officer was injured en route to a traffic accident Friday when he drove his patrol car over a steep embankment to avoid colliding with a car in his path, the California Highway Patrol said.

Officer Scott Weldy, 42, a 15-year veteran, suffered moderate injuries to his head, neck and back during the 9:10 a.m. crash, just off the northbound Antelope Valley Freeway, north of Crown Valley Road, Officer Tom Hastain said.

Weldy was about a mile away from a crash involving a Caltrans truck when he swerved to avoid a car and drove into a center divider before tumbling 100 feet down an embankment, Hastain said. No arrests were made in connection with the crash.
