BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Second Opinion: Canseco Needs Surgery
Texas Ranger outfielder Jose Canseco received a second medical opinion that confirmed the club’s diagnosis--a ligament tear in his right elbow that will require surgery.
Canseco’s elbow was examined by Dr. Frank Jobe in Inglewood, who has recommended ligament transplant surgery. That would end Canseco’s season but might have him back in time for spring training next year. He is batting .255 with 10 home runs and 46 runs batted in in 60 games.
Texas Manager Kevin Kennedy said he’s not sure whether the injury occurred May 29 when Canseco pitched an inning against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The Rangers were being blown out and Kennedy used Canseco as a reliever to send his staff a message. It also appeased Canseco’s wishes to get a chance to pitch in the major leagues.
A third opinion will come later this week from Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., officials said.

The Philadelphia Phillies reinstated third baseman Dave Hollins from the disabled list, less than two weeks after he had surgery to remove a piece of bone from his right hand. Hollins went 0 for 4 against the Cardinals in his first game back, Monday.
