BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : A Time to Reflect for Dusty Baker

Dusty Baker, remembering Roy Campanella, says both Campanella and Jim Gilliam, who died Oct. 8, 1978, meant a lot to him to him during his days as a Dodger.

“Roy coached me all the time when I was here, he and Jim Gilliam,” Baker said Wednesday after he returned from Campanella’s funeral services. “They meant the most to me, and now they are both gone. They were both special to me. They used to talk to me all the time, about baseball things, about life things, everything.”

Baker, who made his managerial homecoming at Dodger Stadium during the Dodgers series against the San Francisco Giants this week, said he visited with many old friends during the services.

“I saw (Steve Garvey) and (Ron Cey) and Reggie Smith and a lot of the guys I played with,” Baker said. “I got to visit with some of the Dodger greats, like (Sandy) Koufax, we had a long talk, and (Carl) Erskine and Duke Snider. They all wished me luck, told me ‘I’m proud of you,’ and a lot of the guys said, ‘I hope you guys win.’

“But who knows? They may tell Tommy (Lasorda) the same thing. That’s cool.”

Pitcher Steve Wilson, who was sent to the Dodgers triple-A Albuquerque Dukes club May 27 when Todd Worrell was activated, injured his knee while pitching and will have arthroscopic surgery today to repair a torn ligament. Wilson was doing well in Albuquerque, with a 0-1 record but a 2.91 earned-run average. . . . Worrell, who went back on the disabled list June 11 with soreness in his elbow, began his rehabilitation assignment Wednesday with the Dukes. Worrell pitched the sixth inning against Las Vegas without giving up a hit and striking out one, and was credited with the Dukes’ 8-4 victory. . . .Tim Wallach, who did not start for a second consecutive game to rest the pinch-nerve in his neck and a sore left shoulder, pinch hit in the sixth inning and flew out to right field with the bases loaded and two outs.
