Share

A Monterey Park woman pleaded guilty Friday to fatally stabbing her two sons in 1991.

Diana Covarrubias, 27, agreed to plead guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. In exchange, the district attorney’s office agreed not to seek the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole.

She faces two prison terms of 26 years to life, according to Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Carol Rash.

Sentencing was set for Aug. 20.

Police said Covarrubias killed Steven Killeen, 6, and Jeffrey Hernandez, 2, before attempting suicide in September, 1991. She stabbed herself and took a large quantity of painkillers, and was found in her bed with the bodies of her children.

Relatives said the woman was distraught over a breakup with the father of the younger son, and had discovered that he was involved with another woman. They said she was also having financial problems.
