A 28-year-old Ventura man was killed early Sunday when he crashed his vehicle into a semi-trailer parked near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Petit Avenue, police said.
John Charles Scurlock, who worked as head coach of the Pleasant Valley Swim Team in Camarillo, was pronounced dead at the scene about 3:50 a.m. Sunday, Ventura police said.
“He just ran into the back of the parked car,” Officer Graham Jeffries said.
Senior Deputy Coroner Zelmira Isaac said Scurlock died from multiple upper body injuries.
An autopsy was performed Sunday, but Isaac said toxicology tests will not be completed for several weeks.
Scurlock is survived by his parents, Richard and Mary Scurlock of Oxnard, and a sister in Florida, Issac said.
The Pleasant Valley Swim Team is a private club that teaches competitive youth swimming in the Camarillo area, said Melville Vincent, a board member of the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District. The park district rents the pool to the swim team.
