AMERICAN LEGION PLAYOFFS : Woodland Hills East Upsets Valley North With Run in 9th
Warren Stewart’s sacrifice fly scored Gabe Kapler with the winning run in the top of the ninth inning and Woodland Hills East upset Valley North, 3-2, in a first-round game of the American Legion District 20 double-elimination playoffs at Birmingham High.
Valley North left-hander Rick Staves picked off Kapler with one out, but an errant throw by first baseman Dave Stevenson allowed Kapler to take third.
Brandon Witkow of Woodland Hills East (15-7) allowed three hits in 6 2/3 innings before Stacy Kleiner relieved with the score tied, 2-2, and the bases loaded for Valley North (19-3).
Gregg Zutler’s diving catch in left field ended the inning.
In another first-round game:
Newhall-Saugus 7, Woodland Hills West 5--Newhall-Saugus scored five runs with two out in the top of the eighth at Burroughs.
Scott Himes hit a a two-run single to tie the game and Scott Minkler singled in two more.
